Portage City planning staff recommended and the Planning Commission approved a sign permit for the Rolling Prairie Conservancy and dog park. The sign permit was submitted by the development team associated with the Rolling Prairie/Gunns development.
Staff reported the sign will be a metal panel mounted on aluminum posts, described in meeting materials as "32 inches high by 8 by 8 feet wide," and sited at the conservancy entrance on the north side of Gunnison Drive. Staff recommended approval and commissioners carried the motion on a unanimous roll call.
During discussion commissioners noted that naming and signage for parks have typically been considered by the Park and Recreation Committee. Staff acknowledged the procedural oversight and said they would relay the matter to Toby Maguire of the parks department; commissioners agreed the placement in the right-of-way requires city approval even if the sign is for a park.
The commission approved the permit but agreed to place the placement/design discussion on the May 12 Park and Rec Committee agenda so that committee members can review aesthetic or naming concerns if they choose to modify the design.
