Committee backs five Seattle Design Commission appointments, sends confirmations to full council

The Seattle City Council Land Use Committee on April 17 recommended confirmation of five appointments to the Seattle Design Commission and will forward that recommendation to the full council for a final vote on April 22, 2025.
The committee voted 4-0 to recommend confirmation of appointments 3115 through 3119, covering Raymond W. Gastel, Sharon Masudi, Phoebe Aaron Bogart, Ben Geist and Kevin O'Neil. "There are 4 votes in favor and 0 opposed," the clerk reported after the roll call.
The commission’s director, Michael Jenkins, told the committee the Seattle Design Commission — in existence since 1968 — advises the mayor, council and city departments on design and environmental implications of capital projects and will have ongoing oversight roles for the West Seattle and Ballard light rail extension stations and guideway segments. Kevin O'Neil was presented for reappointment and as chair, Sharon (Shireen) Masudi as an at-large commissioner and Ray Gastel as an appointed commissioner with a long career in urban design and planning.
Council Member Strauss thanked the nominees and noted the volunteer service the commission provides to the city. Council Chair Mark Solomon moved the committee recommendation; the motion was seconded and approved on the roll call vote.
The committee packet listed the nominees' professional backgrounds and the appointments will proceed to the council’s April 22 agenda for final confirmation.
