Norton High Rubik’s‑Cube club showcases mosaics in student spotlight

At the April 16 Norton School Committee meeting students from the Norton High School Rubik’s‑cube club and advisors Michelle King and Mrs. Chang Young demonstrated mosaics they create from thousands of standard 3×3 cubes.
Advisors explained the club began in 2017 with a loaner set of 600 cubes and has continued to evolve; students showed a small flower mosaic during the meeting because larger displays (some as large as 600 cubes) are not practical to assemble in the chamber. One advisor described the group’s workflow: staff or students render a photo through an online tool that generates a grid; the club then divides the work by sections and assembles the pieces. The advisors said the club teaches algorithms and teamwork and that members can complete full 600‑cube mosaics in under two hours in practiced teams.
Committee members praised the students and invited the public to view ongoing club work in the school rotunda and at middle‑school events where the club has displayed past projects.
The student‑spotlight segment included students Sarah, Liliana, Samantha, Abby and Kaylin; advisors asked the committee and community to submit image requests for future mosaics.
