Norton schools to receive nine outdoor AED units donated through state and nonprofit partnerships

The Norton School Committee voted to accept a donation of nine weatherproof automated external defibrillators (AEDs) for outdoor fields and playgrounds, the committee said April 16.
Allison Tradd, a member of the district wellness committee who works with the American Heart Association, described the donation as a partnership between the AHA, Sisters of the Heart and state Sen. Paul Feeney. Tradd said the units will be placed near the Norton High School multipurpose field, the high-school snack shack, the Yale School tennis courts, JCS softball field, and two locations at Moore Middle School (soccer fields and front courts), among other outdoor sites. She said the units are weatherproof and will be accessible; the planned installation date is the week after school vacation.
Superintendent Jen O'Neil and committee members thanked the donors and noted prior local uses of AEDs at school events as evidence of the devices’ importance. The committee moved and approved acceptance of the donation during the public meeting.
Committee members said the units will improve safety for athletes, spectators and community members using district outdoor spaces. The district will work with public-safety partners to ensure emergency dispatchers can direct first responders to the exact unit location if 911 callers indicate which outdoor AED is being used.
