District presenters said the proposal covers manufacturer procurement, erection of the steel building, excavation and forming of footings, anchor bolt installation, crane and equipment, scaffolding, concrete work for footings, electrical work including bay lighting and exterior wall packs, and the inclusion of a card reader/RFID access system. Staff said the building measures 50 feet by 250 feet and will provide covered storage space for roughly 20 buses. The presentation noted architectural/engineering work and building permits were included in the quote.
Board members asked several clarifying questions during discussion, including whether the building would have a concrete floor (a presenter replied it would be dirt), whether the yard would accommodate the new structure with room to maneuver buses, and whether staff had gathered alternative bids. Facilities staff said the purchase is through a cooperative and that they did not solicit additional formal bids; a contractor contacted informally thought the quoted cost was low.
District staff said the funding will come from a combination of SB9 savings, capital-outlay or public schools capital outlay safety/security monies and realized savings in other maintenance activities. Staff also noted that the district has roughly $2,000,000 invested in activity buses and expects additional new buses to arrive this year, raising the fleet to about 15 buses now with room in the new barn for up to 20.
The board voted to accept the quote; the motion carried by recorded roll call with unanimous 'Yes' votes. Staff said the district will begin coordination for permitting, site work and scheduling once the contract is executed.
Why it matters: The barn creates covered storage and workspace for mechanics, which district presenters said will protect fleet assets from sun and dust, allow safer on-site maintenance and reduce weather exposure that is already causing paint and hood deterioration on current buses.
