Madison Middle School staff and students presented the board with a summary of library-centered student programs — Lunch Bunch, Makerspace and enrichment labs — that run during the school day and during lunch periods.
Amy Black, Madison's library media specialist, and students Hennessy, Caroline and Clifford explained that Lunch Bunch is a Google Classroom–sign-up program offering activities such as Legos, book clubs, puzzles and crafts during one of three daily lunch periods. Participation "ranges from about 5 a lunch period to about 15 a lunch period," Black told the board; with three lunch periods that can total as many as 45 students across the three sessions depending on the activity.
Students described Makerspace opportunities (Wii, iPads, robots and basic coding) that are offered during class as a reward for academic performance, and enrichment time tied to the district's IE periods where students pursue projects across subject areas. Students said enrichment projects have included plotting cities for math and rock-cycle experiments for science; several students reported the activities helped them meet new classmates and sparked interest in future study.
Board members asked whether Lunch Bunch signups were single sessions or multi-week. Students said signups mostly run weekly through Google Classroom and frequently span several weeks so activities can build from session to session.
The board received the presentation as an informational item; no formal action was taken.
