Miss Wilson describes elementary spring art show featuring K–4 student work

A school art teacher identified as Miss Wilson said the district’s annual spring art show takes place in April and features selected work by kindergarten through fourth‑grade students.

Miss Wilson said teachers select ‘‘so many per school’’ to display and that the program draws on yearlong classroom projects. "We study artists. We study genres," she said, adding that students also study cultures and the principles and elements of art.

Teachers use a range of media and projects to prepare students for the show, Miss Wilson said. "We have everything here from, like, primary and secondary color exploration for, like, little kids, like, kindergarten, first grade, all the way up through, like, how to draw, like, the human figure, and how to create things out of clay and mod podge." She described the work as ranging from "messy finger painting kind of thing to really detail oriented multi week projects."

Miss Wilson described the classroom atmosphere as enthusiastic and supportive. "Art education is truly the best job in the world. I feel like a rock star walking through this hallway as the kids are so excited to see me," she said, and quoted students asking, "What are we gonna do today, Miss Wilson? Are we gonna paint? Are we gonna use glitter?"

She emphasized the educational goal of valuing student creativity: "Teaching them that their art has value from a young age is really important for the rest of their life. Seeing that they have creative thinking that's valuable is really important."

The teacher did not specify how many pieces are chosen per school or which schools participate. The public can view the show during April when it is on display, according to Miss Wilson.
