BROOME, Ala. — The Broome City Council on April 14 approved four routine items including the March 24, 2025 meeting minutes and the city’s March accounts payable, authorized a services agreement with the Bridal Area YMCA for lifeguard scheduling at the municipal pool and accepted a $100,000 tree grant awarded by the Alabama Forestry Commission.
The city clerk told councilors the YMCA contract is the annual arrangement under which the YMCA schedules and trains lifeguards and manages pool staffing from May through “almost September.” The clerk said an exhibit describing the calendar is attached to the agreement and will be published once finalized.
Connie Baggett, who presented the tree grant, said Broome was one of about six cities in the state awarded funding and that the city received “one of the largest grants they awarded at $100,000.” Baggett said there is no city match and the grant is handled on a reimbursement basis. She described planned plantings along St. Nicholas downtown, at the Fisher Center, E.O. Wilson Park, a walking route to school and Alco Park; some plantings will be shade trees and some fruit trees.
Votes were recorded verbally during the meeting. For each item the council recorded unanimous approval from Councilor Barton, Councilor Brown and Councilor Broughton.
