RRISD police outline firearm safety outreach and seek grant to distribute gun locks and materials

Chief O’Ruthia said the materials and guidance come from the Texas School Safety Center and Department of Public Safety and include resources for parents and educators on safe storage (cable locks, trigger locks, strong boxes, safes and other devices), age‑appropriate educator toolkits, and messaging on how students should react if they find a firearm: “Don’t touch it. Leave the area and find an adult.”
O’Ruthia said the district has applied for a regional grant administered through the Council of Governments (CAPCOG) to finance distribution of firearm locks and printed materials at back‑to‑school community events. If awarded, Chief O’Ruthia said the district could distribute “anywhere from 12,000 to 15,000 locks” depending on bulk pricing and outreach plans, and would supply bilingual pamphlets and links to the educator toolkit posted on district web pages.
Trustees welcomed the initiative and asked that the resources be posted permanently on the district site and that the board receive periodic updates on grant status and partnership rollouts. Chief O’Ruthia said the district will include the materials in enrollment documentation and on the police department and safety/security pages of the district’s website.
