Superintendent Shauna Murphy told the joint committee that Cincinnati Public Schools has enrolled 202 former Dawn students who presented transcripts and individualized-education-plan documentation and are attending CPS schools.
Murphy said the district still needs transcripts for an additional small group of students (about eight, per the superintendent) to place them accurately by grade level. CPS assigned school social workers and support staff to assist Dawn students with daily attendance and the transition into CPS schools.
"To date, 202 children...are actively enrolled and attending school," Murphy said, adding that school social workers are working with Dawn students to support their daily attendance and placement.
Murphy and other speakers said Bill Garrity, who was running the Dawn program, remained involved to help transition operations and that Dawn’s seniors who had completed graduation requirements will still graduate at a ceremony set for Saturday, May 3, at House of Joy on Central Parkway. The graduation will also include about 120 adult‑education students in the district’s 22‑plus program, Murphy said.
Murphy described CPS’s adult-education programs, including the Aspire program — located at the Ezra Charles Building across from Taft High School — and the 22‑plus adult education program that offers credentialing, GED and diploma options and ESL services. Robbie Thomas was identified as a manager for Aspire during the meeting.
Board members asked for data about where other Dawn students went; Murphy said some families chose other options and that CPS can provide more detailed transfer numbers upon request. No comprehensive total of students previously enrolled at Dawn was presented during the meeting.
