Pullman School District board members discussed a proposal to declare the Pullman Aquatic Center property surplus and potentially sell a roughly 2.5-acre parcel that includes the aquatic center building, parking lot and access road, staff reported.
Superintendent Dr. Courtney Maxwell explained the suggested area and emphasized the playground and adjacent parkland would not be affected. The district has ordered a title report and would obtain an appraisal before the board would formally declare surplus property, Maxwell said.
Board members asked about the timeline and how sale proceeds could be used. Maxwell cited a Washington state statute (referred to verbally during the meeting as "RCW" with specific section numbers read aloud) that restricts proceeds from the sale of school property to capital uses: paying principal and interest on district debt, constructing or renovating buildings, acquiring or replacing equipment, funding technology upgrades or other capital projects deemed necessary by the board.
No sale or surplus declaration was made at the meeting; Maxwell said the district is working through reports and appraisals and expected additional updates at upcoming meetings.
