DeSoto County schools honor valedictorians, salutatorians, Star Students and Star Teachers

The DeSoto County School District recognized valedictorians, salutatorians, Star Students and Star Teachers from its high schools at a special board meeting, the district said, as graduation approaches in just over a month.
The recognition program, presented during the board's special session, highlighted top academic performers at each high school and the Star Student/Star Teacher awards administered through the Mississippi Economic Council. Under that program, the senior in each school with the highest ACT score is named Star Student and may select a teacher who had a lasting impact on their education; students who score 35 or higher are also designated Star Students.
Presenters from individual high schools introduced their honorees. From Center Hill/Centerville area schools, presenters named valedictorian and salutatorian honorees and identified Star Students and Star Teachers; for example, Centerville High School presenters recognized valedictorian and salutatorian honorees and named Angel Pilcher as a Star Teacher. DeSoto Central High School announced Jackson Long as valedictorian and named multiple Star Students and their selected teachers. Hernando High School presented Riley Whitehead as valedictorian and Star Student and named Emily Salinger as Whitehead's Star Teacher. Horn Lake High School recognized June Blakeney as valedictorian and Star Student and named Michael Kenny as Star Teacher. Lake Cormorant, Lewisburg, Olive Branch and Southaven High Schools similarly introduced their valedictorians, salutatorians, Star Students and Star Teachers.
Superintendent's remarks prefaced the recognitions and noted the district packet includes TSI/CSI information and a request to consider potential litigation matters in executive session later. The superintendent encouraged seniors to savor the remaining weeks before graduation and congratulated students and the Star Teachers for their contributions.
Board members and school presenters invited the recognized students and teachers to join the board for photographs and noted the district's upcoming graduation events at the Landers Center.
The board did not take formal action on the recognition items; the segment was ceremonial and informational only.
