Commission backs memorial monument sign and recommends variances to Board of Adjustment

Planning staff said the sign sits in the right of way and exceeds the Downtown Design District's permitted monument sign size (typically 12 feet tall and up to 75 square feet in the district). The installed sign measures roughly 150.5 square feet, and because it is located in the right of way the applicant must obtain a variance from the board.
Barry Lodge of Public Works, whose department is listed as the applicant because the sign occupies the right of way, told commissioners the project required relocating a pedestrian-signal light pole and replacing pavement and conduits. Lodge said crews will follow up to improve the color match of recently replaced pavement that currently appears lighter than surrounding sections.
Staff and Public Works said the sign is intended to serve as a welcoming feature for the memorial, which is scheduled to mark its 30th anniversary this weekend; the sign was temporarily installed under a special-event permit so it could be in place for the anniversary.
The commission approved the application on the basis that it complies with downtown regulations with the condition that the applicant obtain the Board of Adjustment variances from the prohibition on signs in the right of way and from the monument size maximum. The commission separately voted to provide a recommendation of approval to the Board of Adjustment for those variances. Both motions passed.
