Students present AI-in-education forum and draft student-developed guidelines to board

Two juniors from Chino High School’s BSC/BST Academy told the board they want students to have a voice in how artificial intelligence is used in classrooms and asked the district to consider their student-developed guidelines.
Oliver Chen and Lawrence Gibbon described an AI and Education Forum that surveyed more than 800 teachers and students, shared classroom pilot ideas and presented a student-created labeling system by which students could disclose the degree to which AI contributed to submitted work.
“We conducted a survey with over 800 participants from both teachers and students,” Oliver Chen told the board, and demonstrated teacher-facing examples such as using ChatGPT to build a rubric-driven chatbot to help students with assignment limitations. Lawrence Gibbon said the student guideline includes a labeling system teachers could use to indicate how AI was involved in a piece of work.
Why it matters: Several board members praised the students and asked the superintendent to route the materials to district curriculum staff. Trustees noted that preparing students to use—and evaluate—AI is a district instructional priority.
Next steps
The students said they would email the board a written summary and the guideline. Board members and the superintendent encouraged district curriculum staff to review the materials and consider student representation on committees that set AI policy and classroom practice.
