Parks & Recreation approves summer beach programs and community events; Tom Nevers gala cleared pending licensing

The Nantucket County Parks & Recreation Commission on a voice vote approved a series of summer event permit requests for Children's Beach and Tom Nevers Field, including a weekly yoga class, a children’s book reading, a community day hosted by the Nantucket Housing Authority, and a maritime music concert. The commission also approved the Mariah Mitchell Association’s request to host its Stargazer Gala at Tom Nevers Field but made that approval contingent on the organization obtaining required Select Board licensing and a one‑day pouring permit.

The approvals matter because they clear the way for multiple large public events at town parks during the summer season and, in one case, trigger additional licensing and public‑notice steps. Dina Weatherly, cultural affairs and special events coordinator for the Department of Culture and Tourism, presented the permit requests and described schedules, attendance caps and logistics for each event.

The commission unanimously approved the yoga classes led by instructor Bettina Brower, which Weatherly said are requested to run June 25 through Sept. 1, Monday–Saturday, 7:30–8:30 a.m. “We started in 02/2001… this would be our 25th season down there,” Brower said, describing a long‑running program and regular participants.

Also approved was an author reading by Diana Blau, requested for July 2 at 10 a.m. Weatherly said the session would be limited to a maximum of 20 children and their accompanying adults. The commission approved a community day request from the Nantucket Housing Authority for Aug. 6, expected to host up to 500 participants, and an evening maritime music celebration from Egan/Eagan Maritime in partnership with the Historical Association on Aug. 28 (projected attendance similar to last year’s ~120 attendees).

The Mariah Mitchell Association requested use of Tom Nevers Field for a Stargazer Gala on July 24, with a requested cap of up to 400 guests and a multi‑day setup/breakdown window. Amy Young, representing the Mariah Mitchell Association, said the event is the organization’s largest fundraiser and supports a summer internship program that hires about 35 interns. Island Kitchen was named as the proposed caterer; the organization indicated it intends to serve alcohol and has provided proof of insurance and distributor documentation required for one‑day pouring permits.

Commissioners and staff discussed logistics for the Tom Nevers event, including tent placement, parking and the sandy “demo derby” area on part of the site. Charlie (parks staff) advised that some spots are sandy and formerly used for demolition derbies, and recommended using the asphalt parking area where possible. Young said event planners had reviewed locations with a tent vendor and would refine their setup plans.

For the Stargazer Gala the commission approved the permit “pending the approval of those other necessary” licenses and the Select Board’s licensing meeting and public hearing; Weatherly confirmed the licensing hearing is scheduled for May 14.
