Carroll County Schools reports rising STEM certifications, student awards and upcoming events

Superintendent Scott Cowart told the Carroll County Board of Education that two more schools recently received national STEM certification and a third will be certified next week, bringing the district to 20 of 23 schools with national STEM recognition.
"We've had 2 more of our schools get nationally STEM certified, and next week, we'll have a third," Cowart said during his superintendent's report. He added that reaching 20 of 23 schools is notable because "less than 10% of the high schools in the nation have reached that certification level." Cowart also reported academic recognitions: Central High School senior Mary Lois Griffiths won the Georgia High School Association state literacy competition for her literary analysis essay and was recognized as the district's top SAT scorer. Mount Zion High School's literary team won the GHSA Region 7 Single A Division 2 championship. Students from Central Middle and Mount Zion won competitions at the Georgia Student Technology Competition.
Athletics and career-technical achievements were highlighted as well. Central High School's Bentley Burke became the school's first female state wrestling champion in the 105-pound weight class. Bowden High School and Villa Rica High School teams earned state weightlifting championships. Several middle-school and high-school teams won regional championships across sports.
Cowart also named students selected for the Governor's Honors Program: Central High School's Addison Smith, Temple High School's Jack Jordan, and Villa Rica High School's Abel Pop. He noted career-technical (CTA) students received recognition at state championships.
The superintendent circulated tables of staffing and enrollment projections for 2026 and asked board members to review them; he also listed upcoming ceremonies and events, including a senior celebration on the 24th of the month, a "12 for Life" graduation at 6 p.m. at the PAC, and a Val-Sal breakfast at 9 a.m. on the 19th. He said the district will make its first distributions of grants from the "24 Strong" foundation at the Val-Sal event and asked Erin to present a foundation report at a future meeting.
Cowart invited board members to recognize assistant principals during National Assistant Principals Week and praised district employees and volunteers. He referenced Dr. Mike Badowski, who recently represented Villa Rica High School at a leadership luncheon.
No formal board action was required for these updates; they were presented as informational items during the superintendent's report.
