Plan commission backs rezoning for Port Washington public safety building site

The Port Washington Plan Commission recommended approval of a zoning map amendment to rezone roughly 6.67 acres at the northwest intersection of West Grand Avenue, State Highway 303 and County LL to PUL (Public and Utility Lands) to accommodate a proposed public safety building at 1540 West Grand Avenue.
Bob Harris, planning staff, told commissioners that PUL is intended for permanent public uses and that public service buildings, including police and fire stations, are permitted by right in the district. Harris said the property's current commercial B-2 designation also permits some governmental or institutional offices, and staff concluded the rezoning is appropriate and generally consistent with the city's comprehensive plan.
Alderman Neumeier moved to approve the rezoning recommendation; the motion was seconded. The commission voted by voice — members answered "aye" — and the motion carried. The chair noted it would be "a really interesting position" if the commission had not approved the change, but no members opposed the staff recommendation during the record.
The commission invited members to join a groundbreaking scheduled for May 6 at the newly rezoned area.
Staff recommended approval subject to forwarding the commission's recommendation to the Common Council for final action.
