Council approves Southdale Library and Art Center site plan and height variance

Kerry Teague, community development director, said the Planning Commission reviewed the revised site plan and recommended approval, 8–0. The action grants a variance for building height from the 40‑foot limit to 59 feet for the county‑led project.
Hennepin County’s representative, Elizabeth (Liz) Vederko, attended to answer questions. No council member requested changes at the April 16 meeting, and council members voted to approve the resolution without recorded dissent.
The approval allows Hennepin County to move forward with final design and construction planning for the Southdale Library and Arts Center. County and city staff will coordinate remaining site‑improvement steps including required permits and construction phasing.
