Barbara Clark, president of NAACP Sandusky Unit 3199, addressed the Recreation Advisory Committee during the meeting’s open discussion to ask the city to partner on a planned Juneteenth Freedom Fest.
Clark said the local NAACP chapter is planning a multi-day Juneteenth event and needs city guidance to complete the required application and insurance steps from the national office. She asked committee members and recreation staff to meet with organizers as soon as possible to review permitting, code requirements and event coordination. Clark said the group hopes to extend Juneteenth observances across a Friday, Saturday and Sunday and requested help from the city, local nonprofits and faith groups.
A staff member indicated they would collect Clark’s contact information and meet with the NAACP to go over application requirements and next steps. Clark provided a flyer and asked to be added to the committee’s email list so the chapter can stay informed about city processes and timelines. No permits or approvals were issued at the meeting; Clark asked for a follow-up meeting to complete application details and secure national insurance approval.
"We are trying to bring the community together," Clark said, describing the NAACP’s goal for the festival and the need for help from city departments and partner organizations.
The committee did not take formal action on the request during this meeting; staff committed to a follow-up coordination meeting to complete application questions and next steps.
