Sandusky recreation staff outline spring programming, donations and new events including Wheels Park opening

Sandusky Recreation Advisory Committee members received a series of updates on parks projects, youth programming and community events.
Staff reported spring programming is underway: spring break camp and out-of-school programs have registrations opening in April and May, and summer break-camp registration was scheduled to open May 9. A staff member said spring camps and out-of-school programs have filled or fill quickly.
On facility improvements, staff said bids were received for a shade structure and picnic tables at Am Betts near the new playground; the committee expected a contract award to be considered at an upcoming commission meeting. Staff also reported a $5,000 donation from Erie Blacktop to repaint and make repairs to a press box at Erie Blacktop Field; the commission previously accepted that donation.
Event and safety updates included a Wheels Park grand opening, called “Skate Dusky,” scheduled for May 10 with a ribbon cutting at 2 p.m., demos from pro skaters and vendors coordinated with Advocate Skate Works and Halo Live, and food trucks. Staff also said the Dragons & Bacon event has received a grant from Shores & Islands and is scheduled for Sept. 13 from about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Paper District Arena. The committee noted an ODOT (Ohio Department of Transportation) grant award of 160 bike helmets; staff said helmets will be distributed at Safety Town and other upcoming events.
Safety Town’s anniversary and related public-safety programming were discussed; staff confirmed Safety Town is scheduled for May 20. The committee reviewed parks maintenance and field-prep work, opening of restrooms at Dorn Park, and upcoming openings for water and irrigation at several facilities.
Votes recorded during the meeting were procedural: the committee approved the March minutes by voice vote and adjourned at the end of the meeting.
