Council approves South Aurora mural project; designers reference Underground Railroad quilt motifs

The Common Council approved a resolution on April 16 to authorize a mural project on South Aurora Street and wing walls on Green Street. The measure was moved, seconded and carried as part of consent items; Aldeperson Matos recused from that vote.
Caleb from Ithaca Murals presented the project and described the design sketches provided in the council packet. He said the side pieces reference historic quilt patterns that, as the presenter explained, were associated in oral histories with Underground Railroad signage and that the finished murals would be colorful and include embellishments reflecting local history and elder contributions.
Alderperson Kiel praised the project and thanked the muralists for their years of work beautifying Ithaca. Another councilor suggested including local figures such as Diane Sams and Marcia Fort as possible subjects for future murals. The resolution carried, recorded as 10 in favor with Alderperson Matos recused.
Council placed the resolution onto the consent agenda for the regular meeting.
