Committee reviews proposal for countywide Revolutionary War memorials; DAR to present next month

City staff said the DAR is coordinating research to identify Delaware County individuals who fought in the Revolutionary War and that the proposal calls for matching memorials in Sunbury, Powell and Delaware with a common theme so visitors could travel to all three sites. The committee was told the Delaware County Veterans Service office is supporting the project and expects to provide funding for the memorials; staff cited a potential budget figure in the neighborhood of $100,000 per community but said the veterans-service board had not yet finalized a budget.
Staff said the DAR will attend the committee’s next meeting to present details and answer questions about design, research and site selection. The project description in the packet calls for a design competition open to local and nonlocal artists; the final designs for each community may differ but would share unifying elements. The committee asked staff to assemble a list of potential sites; staff noted Sunbury Cemetery’s older section fronting Columbus Street as one option.
Staff said the DAR would lead research and fundraising and is asking only that the city help identify and provide a location if the project moves forward. No formal city commitment or funding decision was made at the April 17 meeting; the committee will hear the DAR representative at the next meeting for more detail on budget and site recommendations.
