Tammy, State Department spokesperson, said the department was monitoring reports of an attempted hijacking on a Tropic Air flight in Belize that local authorities say involved a U.S. citizen who was fatally shot during a confrontation with police.
"Not yet. We watched that unfold, I think, as everyone else did, horrifying," Tammy said. She added the department was "grateful... that that did not turn into a mass casualty event" and that officials did not have additional verified details to share at the time.
The spokesperson said she could not provide further information and that the department was "watching it as well." She noted the briefing had occurred as information was still developing and referred detailed operational questions to local authorities and law enforcement.
Ending: The department said it would follow up when more verified information became available and deferred to local investigators for operational details.
