Council OKs senior-center refrigerator and approves $800 in discretionary funds to support walking program

The Irondale City Council on April 15 approved two items supporting the Irondale Senior Activity Center: a consent purchase of a commercial reach-in refrigerator and a separate allocation of discretionary funds to support a walking program.
Julie Wright, director of the Irondale Senior Activity Center, told the council the center is running a federally and state-funded congregate meal program serving about 40 people daily and needs separate commercial refrigeration to keep delivered meals segregated from other uses of the kitchen. The council approved purchase of a reach-in refrigerator from Presco Inc. for an amount not to exceed $3,292.03; city staff said the purchase will be paid from the general fund and the center’s meal program will control access to the kitchen.
Separately, Council adopted Resolution 2025 R 70 to pool discretionary funds for the center’s walking program and celebration meals: council members Box, Cuellar, Sims and others pledged a total of $800 to cover incentives and a meal to mark the program’s milestone. Wright said the walking group reached its initial goal of 351 cumulative miles (a themed walk to New Orleans) and plans a new goal to Chicago; the funds will be used for the celebratory meal and to sustain momentum for the next program.
Council approved the refrigerator purchase on the consent agenda and approved the discretionary allocations during deliberation when members volunteered amounts and the council recorded the combined allocation.
