Sammamish council adopts resolution affirming support for LGBTQIA2S+ residents and public events

The Sammamish City Council unanimously adopted a resolution on April 15 reaffirming the city's support for LGBTQIA2S+ residents and signaling the city will continue visible celebrations and programming, including raising the Progress Pride flag at City Hall during June and hosting a pride month celebration.
Councilmember Stewart introduced the resolution, which cites Washington state nondiscrimination law (chapter 49.60 RCW) and lists actions the city intends to take, including opposing state or federal legislation perceived to threaten rights or access to health care and education for LGBTQIA2S+ people and reviewing city policies regularly to ensure they are inclusive. The resolution also affirms the city's support for gender-affirming care that is legal in Washington state and specifies that city resources should not be used to investigate, assist investigations, or detain individuals on the basis of exercising the rights listed in the resolution.
Councilmembers praised the measure during discussion; one councilmember described returning from travel to see communities standing up for rights and said Sammamish should do the same. The council voted and the motion carried by voice vote.
Morgan Whitten, a volunteer with Pride Across the Bridge, was present to accept the adopted resolution on behalf of community organizers.
