Yukon Park and Recreation board reviews pool upgrades, summer programs and facility projects

Parks staff detailed Kimball Bay Pool renovations, playground and field improvements, upcoming summer events and programming; the board approved minutes from the March meeting.
Ryan (parks staff) told the Yukon Park and Recreation Board that spring projects and summer programming are under way, with major work at Kimball Bay Pool, new playground installations and expanded event and recreation offerings for all ages.
The report outlined sandblasting and repainting at Kimball Bay Pool, a 50-by-22-foot cantilever shade structure planned for the pool deck, parking-lot repairs, infant-pool turf proposals, fence replacements and other facility repairs. Ryan said the department expects much of the work to be completed in time for Memorial Day weekend operations, though some items may arrive shortly after the pool opens.
The board heard that the recently completed Hillcrest Playground—including bench swings installed in early April—is in active use, and that the Jackie Cooper gym’s former office has been converted to a multiuse program room supporting eSports, birthday rentals and other programs. Ryan said the new gym room includes sound-control wall material and new flooring.
On pool work, Ryan described the Kimball Bay resurfacing: crews sandblasted accumulated paint layers from the shell, added lane markings and repaired gutters, and will replace an old metal shade with a cantilevered shade that staff said will increase shaded deck space. "That cantilever is 50 foot in length, 22 feet in width, and 10 foot high," Ryan said, adding the cantilever’s canopy will be a lime-green color with ocean-blue posts. He said the vendor estimated 30–45 days of production and the department hopes installation will be complete for pool season or soon after.
Ryan also described complementary pool-area work: a new fence to expand usable deck space, potential repainting of the bathhouse, and a quoted plan to add turf to the baby pool area with a contrasting "cool decking" surface and an umbrella shade. He said staff are gathering quotes for those items.
Other park projects reported included new bleachers and concrete pads at Sunrise Softball Field, repairs to a splash-pad water feature performed by the original installer, work to complete the Ranch Wood pedestrian bridge, and planned City Park fencing and irrigation at Chisholm Trail. Ryan said some projects are funded in the current fiscal year.
On programs and special events, Ryan reported roughly 270 participants in spring baseball and T-ball, more than 110 children in preschool indoor soccer at Jackie Cooper Gym, a spring-break tennis camp with 20 participants and a bowling program with more than 20 sign-ups. He said senior games set a participation record with about 225 participants and the flashlight Easter egg hunt drew more than 300 registrants.
Ryan invited board members and the public to several upcoming events: Festival of the Child on May 3 (when City Splash typically opens for kayaking), a community bike ride on May 17, Concerts in the Park beginning June 5 and weekly Friday Fun Days beginning June 6. He also announced an all-star Spirit League game to honor J. C. Ragsdale on May 27 and said staff are coordinating with Ragsdale’s family for the event.
Program additions this year include a wheelchair softball clinic to improve access for players using mobility devices, an adult flag football league, adult craft nights, a Father’s Day basketball skills competition and summer culinary and STEM camps. Board members praised the staff and the new videos used to promote programs. Steven (board member) and Carrie (board member) thanked staff for the senior games and other programs; Bauman (board member) and other members also commended the Spirit League and senior programs. Joe (presiding board member) suggested posting the website and phone number on meeting slides; Ryan agreed to add them.
