Board members reviewed eight playground design options from three vendors for Payne Park and discussed durability, age-appropriate features and color choices.
A parks staff member said all eight designs were within the budget allocated for the project and that the companies were asked to propose their best designs within that spending target. Neighbors informed staff that swings were a priority; staff noted the first four designs include swings while the latter four do not.
Board members discussed whether certain designs, especially those with greater height, would be suitable for very young children at a neighborhood park. The staff member said larger, multi-pod designs are more appropriate for a regional park like Province Park, while smaller structures work better at a neighborhood facility.
The board agreed to solicit additional neighbor feedback and to delay a final decision. Staff noted the city council still needs to appropriate funds at two readings; no contract signing would occur until after those steps. One board member asked to include shade features in the selected design.
Several members suggested mixing elements from different designs is possible; the staff member confirmed vendors can combine pieces and custom colors can be chosen. The board tabled final selection to a future meeting and encouraged members to consult neighbors and family before returning a recommendation.
