After-school provider Miss Johnson to take one-year sabbatical; board and community thank program

Reverend Loretta Johnson, identified in the meeting as “Miss Johnson,” used public participation to thank the Burke County Board of Education and announced she will take a one-year sabbatical to seek financing to secure a permanent facility for the Watts after-school program.

“I’m here for one reason only to tell you all thank you,” Johnson said, noting nearly eight years of the program’s service. She told the board she had decided to pursue funding for “our own place, our own facility” and would pause the program’s use of district classrooms during her sabbatical.

Parents in attendance spoke in support. Ashley Bennett, identifying herself as a parent and supporter, thanked Johnson and staff for delivering “a safe, resourceful, and after-school program” that promotes safety, comfort and student engagement. Board members and others thanked Johnson for her years of service; a board member said, “I want to thank you for your dedication, your hard work, and your commitment to the children of Burke County.”

Johnson told the board she expects to return after the sabbatical and asked for continued communication with district leadership about possible grant or funding opportunities.
