Joliet West teacher Alyssa Greenwald named Golden Apple Excellence in Teaching finalist

The board recognized Alyssa Greenwald, a Joliet West teacher, as a finalist for the 2025 Golden Apple Excellence in Teaching Award.
Dr. Guzman and others noted the Golden Apple selection process begins with nominations (from students, parents, colleagues or community members), continues with portfolio submissions and classroom observations, and concludes with interviews and site observations for finalists. Greenwald was named one of 30 finalists from 470 nominations, the board said. If selected as a 2025 Golden Apple Award recipient, the prize includes a $5,000 cash award, a sabbatical administered by Northwestern University and membership in the Golden Apple Academy of Educators.
Greenwald spoke briefly after being called forward and said she felt honored and that students and staff motivate her work. The board presented a plaque recognizing her accomplishment.
Ending: The district said finalists will find out later in the selection process whether they become award recipients; the board congratulated Greenwald on the district’s behalf.
