The board participated in a swearing-in ceremony for a new police officer and recognized Detective O'Berthe as March officer of the month.
During the meeting the president pro tem administered the oath to an officer identified in the record as Sebastian (surname presented in the packet/transcript as Domczyk in context). The chief said the officer will begin police academy training on May 5 and noted this officer is among the first in several years who will attend the academy as part of the department's staffing plan.
The chief described recruitment challenges and a preference for hiring full-time officers rather than relying on part-time or overtime coverage. He said the village has an authorized patrol strength of 10 patrol officers, that the department currently had eight full-time patrol officers, and that additional sworn hires and lateral candidates were in process to reach the authorized strength.
The board also recognized Detective O'Berthe as the March officer of the month. The chief described several of the detective's contributions: improvements to the investigations unit, volunteer work as a Taser instructor, assuming duties as deputy liquor commissioner after a resignation, work on vehicle upfits that saved the department time and money, and other efforts to update practices and procedures. Detective Roskins was also cited by the chief as instrumental in the investigations unit.
No formal action was required for the recognitions; trustees and the chief thanked the officers.
