Opa-locka mayor urges residents to pressure state lawmakers to preserve community redevelopment agencies

Mayor Mary Taylor closed the roundtable by asking Opa-locka residents to contact their state representatives to oppose measures under consideration in Tallahassee that would limit or eliminate Community Redevelopment Agencies (CRAs).
Mary Taylor said Opa-locka’s CRA had been dormant for years but is now active in tackling blight and rehabbing properties. She urged residents to ‘‘flood’’ state representatives with calls, letters and texts to explain why the city needs its CRA and to protect the program during upcoming state legislative action.
City staff described the CRA as the municipal tool that focuses federal, state or local redevelopment resources and said the city commission sits as the CRA board in addition to two resident members. The mayor said staff would provide contact information so residents could reach their state representatives before the legislative deadline.
Taylor and staff asked residents to participate in budget and legislative advocacy to preserve local redevelopment authority and to support ongoing CRA projects to address blighted homes and lots in Opa-locka.
