The Monroe City Planning Commission on April 14 voted to adopt findings of fact and recommend that the Monroe City Council approve amendments to MMC Title 22 to implement Washington state "House Bill 10 42," which encourages conversion of existing commercial buildings into residential uses.
Leanne, a planning staff member who presented the item, said the "code amendments would allow for greater density in commercial and mixed-use zones that also allow multifamily housing as long as the conversion takes place entirely within an existing building." She summarized that the amendments limit additional local requirements for conversion projects to life-and-safety upgrades required by the state law.
Leanne told the commission the proposal had already been before the Planning Commission for introduction and public hearing, and that the city had discussed the amendment with the Economic Development Board and the Community Human Services Advisory Board.
A commissioner moved that the Planning Commission adopt the findings and authorize the planning commission chair to sign them on behalf of the commission, recommending the City Council approve the MMC Title 22 amendments required by House Bill 10 42; the motion was seconded and the commission approved the recommendation.
The adopted findings will be transmitted to the City Council for introduction and further action.
