Alex Lial, president of the Mission Professional Law Enforcement Association (MPLEA), told the City Council that his union had recently registered the name "Mission Police Association" after discovering the name had been involuntarily terminated by the Texas Secretary of State in 2008.
Lial told the council MPLEA had secured the registration to ensure continued lawful representation for Mission Police Department officers and said claims that an organization operating under the name "Mission Police Association Local 293" had legal standing were inaccurate because that Local 293 name had not been registered with the Texas Secretary of State, he said.
The matter prompted the city manager to request referral of the petition and related materials to the City Attorney for legal review. Council then moved the item into executive session and later voted to table further action while staff and legal counsel examine the documents that had been dropped off shortly before the meeting.
Why this matters: The dispute concerns which organization is legally registered to represent sworn officers and whether an external petition should affect who may appear before the council. Council did not make a final determination on representation at Monday—s meeting; instead it paused action until the City Attorney reviews the materials.
Council voted to table the matter for legal review; the motion carried unanimously.
