County staff said the RFP for thermal imaging cameras was issued in November as a FY25 budget request from emergency management and the fire department. Bids were opened Dec. 19; two bids were received but only one qualified because the non-qualifying bid's cameras were not rated for fire department use. The county recommended Whitmer Public Safety to supply 23 units and associated lanyards for $24,190.25. The county stated the amount is included in the department’s adopted budget for the fiscal year.
Supporters on the dais emphasized the devices’ role in firefighter safety: presenters described the cameras’ ability to detect heat through smoke, locate victims and help firefighters retrace exit routes. Commissioners moved and seconded the purchase and approved it by voice vote.
Ending: County staff will issue the purchase order and proceed with delivery and deployment to volunteer and career fire units as appropriated in the FY25 budget.
