Chief Hurtado addressed the council and provided a department summary: last year the Riverton dispatch center received more than 30,000 telephone calls, of which about 2,500 were 911 calls. Hurtado described dispatchers as “the reassuring voice” during emergencies and noted dispatchers are now recognized as first responders. He also outlined that the department is staffing up: three recent academy graduates joined the force, two officers deployed overseas are expected to return, and the dispatch group includes a supervisor and several field training officers.
Mayor Hancock and Chief Hurtado individually recognized dispatch staff by name and role: Sarah Nelson (Dispatch Supervisor), Brandy (dispatcher since 2007), Kristen Havens (field training officer and NIBRS support), Camille (overnight dispatcher and nursing student), Megan Ayers (DUI specialist and FTO), Caitlin Parker (records/vehicle verification), Trey Laird (night shift), Brandon Brookover (holding a dispatch certificate and providing coverage that evening), and Lisa Looper (evidence tech who covers dispatch as needed). The mayor and council thanked Brandon Brookover for covering the dispatch center while staff attended the meeting.
Council members and staff emphasized dispatchers’ role in public safety and the council presented the proclamation and allowed the chiefs to personally thank employees.
