The Charleston County Historic Preservation Commission elected English Hertel chair and Donna Gardner vice chair during its regular meeting. The commission voted by roll call; the newly elected officers will begin their terms at the close of the meeting.
The commission held open nominations for chair and vice chair as required by its rules. English Hertel and Michael German were nominated for chair; a roll-call vote produced a majority for Hertel. For vice chair the membership initially split among Donna Gardner, Michael German and Pat Jones, producing a tie that required a second round of nominations and voting. After the tie was resolved and a second ballot taken, Donna Gardner received a majority and was named vice chair.
Commissioners discussed procedure for the runoff during the vice-chair balloting but proceeded by roll call. The commission recorded the vote for the record. The commission's rules state newly elected officers begin their terms upon completion of the meeting in which they are elected.
