Commission signs off on MPO transportation improvement program covering 2026–2029

The Lincoln-Lancaster County Planning Commission recommended approval April 16 of the Metropolitan Planning Organization's Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for federal fiscal years 2026–2029, finding the list of projects conforms with the MPO long-range transportation plan.
Paul Barnes of the planning department and Lincoln MPO summarized the annual TIP and noted a funding update to the Railroad Transportation Safety District project for a grade-separated crossing at 30th and Cornhusker. Barnes said the project remains in the TIP but funding figures were adjusted to reflect updated numbers as the project moves toward construction.
Barnes also noted that Lincoln voters renewed the quarter-cent sales tax known as "Lincoln on the Move" for an eight-year period; the current sales tax runs through Sept. 30, 2025 and the renewed tax would continue through Sept. 30, 2033. Staff said conversations will continue about priorities and how the renewed revenue will be programmed into future capital programs and the TIP.
The TIP, which covers projects from the city, county, Nebraska Department of Transportation, Star Tran, Lincoln Airport Authority and the Railroad Transportation Safety District, will be forwarded to the Officials Committee and the Nebraska Department of Transportation and then to the Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Authority for final approval. The commission approved the TIP recommendation by vote (record show 7-0 for this item).
