Council authorizes applications for Heinz Street corridor grants

The Republic City Council voted to authorize city staff to apply for multiple grants to fund improvements along the Heinz Street corridor.
Karen Haines, the city’s community development director, said staff will pursue opportunities including Missouri Department of Economic Development CDBG competitive funding, the Ozarks Transportation Organization’s Pedestrian Infrastructure Grant Program and the Federal Highway Administration’s Safe Streets for All program. “If funded, city staff will return to council with a resolution to accept the awarded funds and a not-to-exceed amount for the city’s matching contribution,” Haines said.
Haines told the council staff will apply for additional opportunities that arise during the year and that application submissions themselves carry no upfront cost. A council member asked whether the projects would cover the entire Heinz Street corridor or be completed in sections; Haines said scoping depends on the particulars of each grant application but the city’s target is to apply for as many grants as possible for the corridor from east to west.
Council approved the authorization by an 8–0 vote. If grants requiring a local match are awarded, staff will return to council with the required match amounts for approval.
