Board member Lisa presented research from Florida public-art peers showing murals in the state commonly last 8 to 20 years depending on materials and exposure, and noted some municipalities use aluminum panels to extend life and enable relocation. The board discussed specifying high-longevity materials, UV-protective sealants and a recommended maintenance schedule in the call to artists so submissions reflect long-term durability in Oviedo’s climate.
Board members reviewed past local mural contracts (which in one earlier case included up to $3,000 in city-provided materials) and compared regional examples. The board confirmed the mural project’s theme will highlight the city’s centennial: "Oviedo past, present and future." Staff will prepare a draft call to artists and circulate it to the board before the next regular meeting. The board also agreed to hold a work session or special meeting to review design submissions so any final design approval occurs in open session, consistent with the Sunshine Law.
A motion to set the mural call at an inclusive $7,000 was moved, seconded and approved unanimously. Staff will circulate a draft call and coordinate a timeline and review session for submissions.
