Commission begins revision of open-hire rules; about 40 comments compiled

The Berkeley County commission discussed revisions to its open-hire rules (agenda item 20240013) and reviewed a consolidated spreadsheet that contains roughly 40 entries of suggested edits and comments.
Commission staff reported that comments were received from the county legal department, the deputy sheriff association, Chief Young, Lieutenant Christian, Lieutenant Boothby and staff contributors. Commissioners said many of the items will require deletion, spelling corrections or further discussion and that the commission will schedule a reconvening meeting to consider the proposed revisions.
Staff said it will circulate meeting dates and post the follow-up meeting so representatives from the sheriff’s office and the deputy sheriff association can attend. The item will remain open on the commission’s agenda.
