City staff told the Santaquin City Council that contractor pricing for a planned recreation building and a cemetery storage building exceeded earlier estimates and that staff recommends moving some outfitting into the construction phase to improve efficiency.
On the recreation building, staff said the original scope has been slightly expanded to move some interior work forward (flooring and some outfitting) because doing that now reduces rework and is more economical. The city currently has $250,000 budgeted for the recreation project; staff said additional budget amendments will be necessary to cover the current construction estimate. Staff proposed an enclosed lean‑to addition of about 1,500 square feet (roughly $69,000) that would provide storage, restrooms and a reception area; staff described the lean‑to as a cost‑efficient way to gain usable space and asked the council to consider approving the additional scope with a future budget amendment.
For the cemetery building (storage north of the cemetery), staff said the budgeted $125,000 is below the current estimate of about $139,000 and that the city would need to budget the difference; staff said both projects are funded from impact fees rather than general-tax dollars.
Why this matters: Both projects are intended to improve public amenities and operations. Moving some outfitting into initial construction avoids future rework but requires the council to approve additional spending. Staff said funds are available in impact-fee accounts but that the council would need to approve budget amendments.
Next steps: Staff will return with formal budget amendments and clearer contractor pricing if the council wants to advance the projects now rather than staging outfitting in a later fiscal year.
