Council approves event permits, officer travel and routine contracts as consent items

At its April 15 meeting the Jasper City Council approved multiple consent items: two special-event permits, overnight travel for police officers and staff, and a one-year renewal for tree removal services.
Kelly Barnes, special-events coordinator, described two requests. Young Jewelers requested a watch-sales event for Friday, June 13, on Nineteenth Street between Fourth and Fifth Avenues; setup would begin at 1 p.m., the event would run 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and the applicant requested a city street closure and an off-duty officer. Jasper Area Entertainment requested the Foothills Festival for Friday and Saturday, Sept. 12-13, including street closures on Nineteenth Street from near First Avenue East to Sixth Avenue; setup would begin at 6 a.m., with events running evenings to about 11:30 p.m. City departments (police, fire and streets) reviewed both requests and had given approvals; a special-event business license and an evacuation plan will cover vendor operations and safety.
Chief J.C. Pope asked the council to approve overnight travel for three officers to intermediate SWAT training in Anniston in May and to allow a captain to attend an FBI summer conference in Orange Beach May 18-20. The council approved those travel requests by voice vote.
Jessica Cook reported one RFP response for "veil medical services" from Dr. Roger Childers of Preemptive Forensic Health Solutions at $62,000 per year; Cook recommended rejecting the bid to negotiate pricing. The council voted to reject and authorize negotiation as requested.
Council also approved renewing the contract for tree removal services for a second year with Newman Tree Service under the same terms and pricing.
