Beloit committee clears 2025 summer school plan, sends program to consent agenda

A School District of Beloit committee on April 15 recommended approval of the district’s 2025 summer school program and asked that the proposal be placed on the board’s consent agenda so registration can open April 25.

Staff told the Teaching, Learning, Equity and Pupil Services Committee the program will continue to split offerings between “A path” (academics — literacy and math) and “W path” (wellness and enrichment), while expanding support for students who have personalized reading plans under Act 20. A staff member said the district will use a system called NextPath to communicate reading-plan information to families and to encourage participation.

The presenter said the district is closing out an ESSER-funded competitive grant that had helped cover summer costs; without that grant, the district will rely on state reimbursement tied to instructional minutes and the district’s regular budget. Staff said most summer materials will be replenishments rather than large new purchases.

Board members asked how registration and attendance affect state reimbursement. The presenter said registration opens April 25 and remains open through the summer; staff take daily attendance that is used to calculate instructional minutes for state reimbursement. Committee members also asked whether materials (including Haggerty literacy kits) might qualify for retroactive reimbursement; staff said they would investigate and follow up.

A motion to recommend the 2025 summer program to the full board passed unanimously at the committee meeting.

Details: committee members voted to send the program to the consent agenda and to open registration on April 25. Staff estimated no large capital purchases would be required and emphasized the district’s goal of “hands-on” summer learning, math manipulatives and wellness activities.
