Summary
The town’s building department updated commissioners on its building recertification program: 19 buildings recertified, three buildings with active code cases, 24 buildings under permit for concrete restoration and specific compliance dates for overdue filings.
Katarina Chidawi, representing the town’s building department, told the Town Commission of the Town of Highland Beach that the department has recertified 19 buildings to date and is tracking several overdue and in-progress applications.
Chidawi said three buildings have active code cases and two buildings are overdue on concrete-restoration applications (both parts of the townhouses of Highland Beach condominium). She told commissioners Regency Highland’s 3908 building is overdue on an electrical application and currently has a compliance date of May 11 before a special magistrate hearing.
The department reported 24 buildings currently under permit for concrete restoration and one building under permit for electrical recertification. Chidawi said one building remains within its due date to submit phase 1 reports and three buildings are too far in the future to yet require notification.
When asked how many buildings are complete, a commissioner said the count is 19. Commissioners compared Highland Beach’s progress favorably to neighboring municipalities and credited the building official for advancing recertification work.
Chidawi’s update focused on status tracking and compliance dates rather than changes to recertification requirements. She answered commissioner questions about future notifications and the use of special magistrate hearings to secure permits and extensions.
