Black Hawk County to hold household hazardous waste collection May 3; event by appointment

Black Hawk County officials said the county's annual household hazardous waste and electronics collection will be held May 3 by appointment and will run 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The event, which the presenter said has run since 2014, accepts household hazardous waste such as stains, pesticides, herbicides, corrosive cleaners and many types of electronic items that have ports or power cords. The presenter said the program typically serves about 600 households during the event window.
The county asked residents to make appointments so staff and volunteers can manage traffic and keep wait times down. "We found out that, in the past, we'd have 2 or 3 people waiting 2 or 3 hours," the presenter said, explaining that scheduling allows the county to match volunteer staffing to appointment slots.
The presenter listed items that will not be accepted at the collection: paint (residents were advised to dry paint and dispose of it with normal trash once solid), appliances (residents can use other programs), explosives and, generally, straight fertilizers that are considered regular trash. The presenter said items with herbicide mixed in ("weed and feed") will be accepted.
Electronics: the presenter said the Cedar Falls Transfer Station accepts e-waste year-round and that the county event collects a larger range of electronics (extension cords, Christmas lights, small appliances such as toasters and air fryers but not microwaves). He also said the collection typically handles large volumes: about 17,000 pounds of electronics in one event and more than 1.2 million pounds of electronics collected across 15 years of events.
Volunteers: the event is operated by volunteers. The presenter said the program usually fields 40 to 50 volunteers and that the organizers were short of their usual volunteer count at the time of the meeting.
