Commerce council shortens park hours to 5 a.m.–10 p.m. amid vandalism concerns

Miss Jacobson, assistant city manager for community services, told the council that the city’s ordinance currently lists park hours as 5 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. and that park staff and the police department have observed increases in vandalism, youth fights and other criminal mischief—especially during times such as spring break. “This ordinance would recommend our operational park hours from 5AM to 10PM instead of 11:30PM,” Miss Jacobson said.
The council opened a public hearing; no members of the public addressed the council during the hearing and the hearing was closed. A motion to adopt the ordinance on second reading passed by voice vote; the transcript records an affirmative voice vote but does not give a roll-call tally.
City staff said the change will allow officers and park staff greater legal basis to address late-night behavior that previously occurred during hours when parks were allowed to remain open.
