Committee members said they had compiled a preliminary list of roughly a dozen locations across the town — including Miami Lakes Way beach, Lake Catherine, Lake Mary, Lake Martha, and the marina — and asked staff to perform on-site checks for public access, fencing and suitability. The committee recorded the list and directed a member to take photographs and report back so the final letter and map can be completed for Council review.
The motion that passed directed staff to survey the named spots and return with photos and a recommendation. Committee members emphasized that the survey was a precondition to a formal recommendation to Council: the committee would not finalize or submit a location map until the walk-throughs were complete. Members also discussed whether some lakes have no public access and flagged several privately owned lakes that should be excluded from the final list.
Committee members said the list currently includes about 13 candidate sites; members noted that some locations might be consolidated (for example, placing two devices at a single, high-traffic access) if property access or safety concerns make additional placements impractical. Members also discussed logistics including sponsorship, who would pay for equipment and whether any budget line exists; the committee confirmed its own operating budget is minimal and that outside sponsorship or third-party funding would likely be needed to purchase devices.
The committee chair asked volunteers to survey the locations and promised the results would be incorporated into the committee's letter to Council and the committee report. Members agreed the item should be returned to the committee for final approval before submission to the Council.
The motion passed by voice vote.
