Board authorizes advertisement for public hearing to codify biennial real‑estate reassessments

Fluvanna County staff asked the Board of Supervisors on April 16 to authorize advertisement of a proposed county‑code amendment that would codify the county’s current practice of conducting biennial real‑estate reassessments.
County attorney/finance staff (presented by Mr. Whitmer) told the board the proposed code section would add a provision—pursuant to Virginia Code authority—stating the county shall perform reassessment and equalization of all real estate on a biennial basis with valuation dates of January 1. The county has conducted biennial reassessments since 2013, staff said, and the proposed ordinance would simply codify that existing practice.
The board approved a motion to advertise the proposed code amendment for a public hearing to be held May 21, 2025. Staff said the next reassessment, if the ordinance is adopted, would value real estate as of Jan. 1, 2027 and that the county is issuing an RFP for an assessment firm to conduct the reassessment.
Action: Motion to advertise was made by Mr. Goode and seconded by Mr. Sheridan; the motion passed on a voice vote (chair announced a 5‑0 vote).
