Commissioners approve early replacement of county firewalls after repeated reboots

Flathead County commissioners voted Jan. 7 to amend capital-improvement funding so the county IT department can replace its primary and secondary network firewalls sooner than planned after repeated failures.
An IT staff member identified as Matt told the board the county has had problems applying patches to the existing firewall; after a December 18 patch the device began rebooting within an hour. Staff proposed accelerating two projects: IT0244-0234 to replace the primary firewall and project 02035 to replace the secondary (failover) firewall so the county has a high-availability pair.
Matt said the combined project cost is about $70,000. He asked that $35,000 be made available now for the primary firewall (revising a prior $40,000 allocation) and that the secondary firewall funding be adjusted from $25,000 to $35,000 and used this year. Staff reported $56,680 is currently funded and a cash balance of $13,320 is available to cover the remainder.
Commissioners approved the amendment on a voice vote. The IT office said replacing the firewalls now will restore a supported, patched configuration and provide failover capability in the near term.
The county will proceed to procure the hardware and implement the high-availability firewall pair as soon as contracting allows.
