Health department asks for extra custodial day, updates ARPA-funded building work after federal grant lost

A representative for the county health department told commissioners the only new request in the department’s budget is funding for an extra custodial day each week to improve cleanliness of the public health facility.
The presenter estimated the added custodial day would cost about $3,500 annually and said the department believes two days per week has not been adequate to keep the building sanitary given its size. The representative said the custodial increase would be added to the existing custodial line.
On capital needs, the health official said about $12,300 of the $116,000 budgeted for building improvements has been spent on engineering plans (Ryan Engineering) tied to ARPA-funded plumbing work to divert water away from the building. The presenter said the department expects to begin the plumbing project around May or June and does not anticipate additional ARPA expenditures this fiscal year beyond the planned project.
The presenter also said the department lost Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) federal funding that had been expected to pay for conversion of a storage area into office space; with the ELC award gone at the federal level the department must put those conversion plans on hold until alternative funds are identified.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about dollar amounts and line items; the representative confirmed the custodial increase and the ARPA plan. There was brief procedural movement toward approval of the presented budget lines during the meeting.
